Optical plate (23) forms a mechanical bridge (21) for the uniformly-transparent semiconductor, with luminescent and non-luminescent columns (24, 34) at required mutual spacing. Luminescent column includes a layer structure (27) and luminescence active layer (26). All columns terminate below, in the same plane of a planar mounting surface (33). Columns taper conically away from the plate with its general, transparent, uniformly and highly conductive distribution layer (28), supplying the active layer (26) with charge carriers from an electrode (36). The distribution layer is connected by a metallic track (37) along the sloping surface of a non-luminescent column (34) to its contact (36) on the mounting surface (33). Each active zone on its mounting surface is provided with an electrode of opposite polarity (32) to supply charge carriers of a second kind. Adjacent mounting surfaces (33) are provided, having a similar metal coating (37). This permits simultaneous, identical introduction of a supply or control circuit.
