The method includes adjusting the rate of recycling of the exhaust gas using a adjusting unit as a function of a functioning point. During the adjustment, the instability of IC engine functioning is detected and calibrated by characteristic values. The IC engine functions as a function of functioning parameters, with a homogenous air-fuel mixture or a stratified air-fuel mixture. In the stratified charge functioning mode, and in the case of active recycling of the exhaust gases, the values characterizing the instability of functioning (LU) are compared to a threshold value (SW). The rate of recycling of the exhaust is increased if the values characterizing the instability of functioning does not reach the threshold value. In case the rate of recycling overshoots the threshold value, one determines whether the limit value for the minimal rate of recycling of exhaust is attained. As a function of the result of that comparison, one reduces the rate of recycling of exhaust gas or the respective air-fuel ratio of the air-fuel mixture. The adjusting of the recycling rate is achieved by controlling the degree of opening of the exhaust recycling valve (9) and/or the adjusting of the air-fuel ration (lambda) by the throttle valve (5).
