The system to thread a web (3) through a papermaking or cardboard prodn. machine, where the leader strip is carried from the feed zone to the transfer zone at a machine station, has at least one guide roller (19) at the machine workstation. The mantle of the guide roller (19) has at least one groove and/or several openings (53), where the web leader strip passes over the mantle surface during the threading operation. The guide roller (19) is a hollow cylinder, where at least some of the surface openings (53) and/or groove zones open into the interior (55) of the guide roller. The groove(s) and/or openings (53) are held under suction or they carry a fluid or gas medium under pressure through them. The zone of the roller (19) mantle circumference which has the groove(s) and/or openings (53) is at least as large as the laying surface for the web leader strip, either at the edge of the roller (10) or at its center. At least some of the mantle openings (53) which open into the interior of the guide roller are located in at least one groove.
