The device includes an over-temperature protection device with at least one temperature sensor (3,4,6). When threshold temperatures are reached, the current to the fan drive is reduced or switched off. The temperature thresholds are dynamically set based on the rate of change of the temperature measured by the sensor, and the larger the rate of change, the more the thresholds are reduced. The temperature thresholds may be determined empirically for each type of fan controller.
