The method involves recording traffic data at measuring points, including at least information about a traffic intensity or average vehicle speed, and classifying a traffic condition in respectively one of several condition phases, including at least free traffic and synchronized traffic. An inquiry of the current position and/or a prognosis of a future position of a flank between an area of free traffic and an area of synchronized traffic is undertaken continuously, using at least a temporal course of the traffic intensity and/or the average speed in the corresponding period at corresponding measuring points in the area of free traffic and the area of the synchronized traffic, respectively, as input parameters. The method is preferably executed in a calculation unit of a traffic center, especially under application of a fuzzy logic system.
