The device has an ultrasonic transducer on a sound transmissive window on a channel carrying the fluid or separate ultrasonic transducers on one or more sound transmissive windows (2,3) on the channel for sending and receiving the ultrasonic signal and a control and evaluation circuit. Each piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer (11,12) operates at a different frequency, whereby the highest frequency is about double the lowest.
