The data transmission rate setting system has each substation connected to the field bus (20) signalled at a relatively low data rate via the central control, before selection of a higher data rate by the central control. The substations may be signalled at the higher data and the field bus disconnected by the central control if the number of indicated substations differs for the signalling at the different data rates. An Independent claim for a field bus system for a safety critical process control is also included.
