The invention relates to the use of sulfoalkyl-modified cellulose ethers, which are optionally substituted by hydroxyalkyl groups, as non-associatively active thickeners for aqueous coating systems such as dispersion paints, silicone resin paints or silicate paints. The invention also relates to a method for producing hydroxyalkyl-methyl-sulfoalkyl celluloses suited for this intended use.
