Determining the inhibition microbial nitrification by a sample, using a preserved culture of at least one defined nitrifying bacterial strain as a test organism, is new. The bacterial strains are ammonia- or nitrite- oxidizers. The method comprises measurement of the oxygen consumption of the test organism in the absence and presence of the sample in a test apparatus.
