The present invention discloses a recording medium in which aspect ratio information of a subject image is stored, and an apparatus and method for recording and reproducing a subject image. According to the present invention, a subject image constituting a menu is reduced to a small screen on a recordable and rewritable disc, and then the image of the small screen is encoded and recorded. According to this aspect ratio information, the main subject image is reproduced as the image having the aspect ratio of the original image, so that the subject image of the original image in the 16: 9 ratio can be configured visually and naturally without deformation, and the user is displayed as a menu. It is easy to distinguish whether the aspect ratio of the original image is 16: 9 or 4: 3 by looking at the shape of the main image.
