In ATM-LAN networks, the ports of multiple bridges are uniquely identified only by port number and are connected to the LAN segment and ATM network. The MAC frame from the source terminal is received at the first port and buffered in the FIFO and searches through memory for an entry containing the source address of the frame. If an entry is found, the frame is sent on the second port identified by the port number contained in the entry. If no entry is found, an address derivation request is sent over the ATM network to the LAN emulation server and obtains an ATM address corresponding to the source address of the frame. A connection establishment request is sent to the ATM network to establish a virtual connection in the ATM network according to the source ATM address. The frame is then sent on the port to which the ATM network is connected.
