PURPOSE: A fractal image compressing method using a gene algorithm is provided to find an optimum domain block and a conversion linear expression simultaneously using the gene algorithm in the event of compressing a fractal image. CONSTITUTION: An image is divided into nxn range blocks(S20). The number (nxnx8+1), obtained by adding up the number of conversion linear expressions (nxnx8) to be changed and a parameter of a domain block, is decided as a parameter (x) of the existing generation(S22). The parameter is converted into a parameter (x') of a new generation through a selective hybridization and mutation of a gene algorithm(S24). It is judged that if the parameter of the new generation is better than the parameter of the existing generation(S26).
