PURPOSE: A method for a volume calculation and a separation of a white matter and a gray matter in a brain image is provided to calculate the volume by separating the white matter and the gray matter in a brain image provided from a magnetic resonance imaging device(MRI). CONSTITUTION: A method for a volume calculation and a separation of a white matter and a gray matter in a brain image includes the following steps. Firstly, from a brain image of a PD image and a T2 image are removed a part except a brain. Secondly, from a PD image and a T2 image are removed the brain and a spinal chord. thirdly, each partial volume of the white matter and the gray matter is calculated by the use of a histogram based upon the PD image. Fourthly, an integral value of the distribution function is calculated and a discrimination value is calculated. Fifthly, the separated image is generated on the basis of the discrimination value. Sixthly, each of the volumes of the white matter and the gray matter is calculated by the use of partial volume information of the white matter and the gray matter and slice information provided from a computed tomagraph.
