A downhole tool (102, fig 1) has a steerable antenna (208) that locates a formation deployed remote sensing unit (200), powers the remote sensing unit (200), and retrieves formation data collected by the remote sensing unit (200). Electronics for operating the steerable antenna (208) and for performing the aforementioned operations are contained within the tool (102, fig 1). The steerable antenna (208) includes a number of coils. By selectively controlling the magnitude of the electrical signal provided to each of the coils, or by selectively amplifying the signal produced by each of the coils, a composite radiation pattern maximum may be produced at any direction with respect to the downhole tool (102, fig 1). The steerable antenna (208) may include an orthonormal coil set or another coil set which allows the antenna radiation pattern maximum to be controlled. Further multiple steerable antennas may be included which work in cooperation with eachother.
