A composition comprising (i) a selected vial antigen absorbed to a poly(-a-hydroxy acid) microparticle and (ii) a pharmaceutically acceptable excipients, with the provisos that (a) the composition does not comprise an antibody specific for the viral antigen and (b) the microparticles are not lamellar particles which are at least in part crystalline. The microparticle is formed from a poly(a-hydroxy acid) selected from the group consisting of poly(L-lactide), poly(D,L-lactide) and poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide). The viral antigen is gp120, p24gag, influenza A haemagglutinin, or herpes simplex virus gD2.
