PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an updated map specific to its user and corresponding to the road use conditions of the user. ;SOLUTION: This on-vehicle information processing unit 10 having a map information updating function is mounted in a car navigation system 1 used as an on-vehicle system. The processing unit 10 is equipped with I/Fs(interfaces) 23 to 25, a ROM(read- only memory) 22, and CPU(central processing unit) 20. The I/Fs 23 to 25 are used to input map information from a map DB(database) 11 including the widths and shapes of roads RD where a car CR runs, own vehicle position information of the car CR from a GPS receiver 12, and image information of the roads RD from cameras 13. The ROM 22 is stored with a program for analyzing road survey data including the widths and shapes of the roads RD based on the image information and the own car position information inputted from the I/Fs 23 to 25, comparing the analyzed road survey with the map information, updating the map information so that it become equal to the road survey data, and displaying it on a monitor 14 by means of the I/F 26.
