PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more quickly and accurately discriminate a collision form of a vehicle.;SOLUTION: Before a first maximum value is detected in deceleration G of the vehicle, whether the collision form is an oblique impact or not is decided. When the first maximum value is detected, whether the collision form is a head-on collision or an offset collision is decided. Because the decision as to the oblique impact or not can be performed based on a difference of force applied to a structural member on a side surface of the vehicle, the decision can be performed at an extremely initial stage of the collision. The decision as to the head-on collision or the offset collision can be performed by deceleration from deceleration sensors mounted on front right and left sides of the vehicle up to the first maximum value. Therefore, because the discrimination of the collision form is performed just after the first maximum value is detected, that is, up to the initial stage of the collision, the discrimination result can be effectively used for starting timing of an occupant protecting device.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
