Control system for internal combustion engine detects fault on basis of set target advance angle, detected actual valve timing and stored value of detected actual timing
The control system has an operating state detector (1), a valve timing control change unit (7), a valve timing detector (2), a target advance angle setting device (3), an actual setting value memory unit (4), a computation device (5) for an actual advance angle, a valve timing control change unit controller (6), a second memory device (9) that stores the actual timing detected value if the target advance angle setting value is at a defined value, whose stored value is to be updated, a memory update blocking device (10) and a fault assessment device (8A). A fault is detected on the basis of the set target advance angle, the detected actual valve timing and the second stored value.
