The ink application device is part of a rotary offset printing press with a platen cylinder (4) and at least one inking roll (5, 8-18, 25, 28) by which ink is supplied to the platen cylinder. The inking roll has an ink spreading element (6, 7) by which the ink layer (23) is smoothed out on the roll, which may be an ink application roll in direct contact with the platen cylinder.
