A sensor to detect the thickness of sedimentary deposits in basins, lagoons, rivers or lakes without the application of external thrust from a pushrod. A sensor assembly measures the depth of a layer of sediment on the bottom of a water treatment basin, lagoon or waterway. Attached by an umbilical wire, the cylindrical probe has a sharp conical nose which penetrates the upper boundary layers of sludge, exposing sidewall detectors top the sludge layers. The housing also incorporates an electric motor with an eccentric mass on the motor shaft, a reflection or transmitted light photometer and a measuring aperture in the cylinder wall. The housing further has a pressure transducer with an outer membrane. The sensor is allowed to descend vertically through with running motor.
