The flow velocity measuring device uses a sensor (10) with a sleeve extending to a point at the end facing the flow and enclosing a concentric rod which is connected to the sleeve only at its point, the deflection of the free end of the rod detected optically as an indication of the flow velocity. The optical measuring signal is obtained via a glass rod (13) with a cylindrical refractive index profile, positioned behind the sensor and coupled to the latter via an optical lens system (14).
