A camera (21) is used with a display (10) indicating a raster/screen of parallel lines produced with distance numbers assigned. The position of the lines is calculated on the display from the angle between the optical axis (9) of the camera and one visual beam directed at the lane (6) point corresponding to distance. The position of the raster lines or object image (13) is corrected in order to balance the pitch of the angle of the vehicle (3) by adjusting the camera in accordance with the pitch angle. AN Independent claim is made for apparatus for measuring distance between vehicles travelling in a lane.
