The method involves the ABS transmitting a warning signal to the electronic gearbox controller on detecting a tendency to locking of the vehicle wheels without the brake pedal being actuated or after the end of a brake pedal actuation process and the associated build-up of brake force. The signal causes the gearbox to be changed to a no traction state by releasing at least one coupling or brake.
