Glass melt refining, using a difficultly soluble, high melting refiner which initiates gas bubble formation and growth and which only completely dissolves in the melt at the end of refining. Preferred Features: The glass has the composition (by wt., on oxide basis) (a) 20-37% SiO2, 8-20% B2O3, 43-55% BaO, 0.01-10% ZnO, 0-7% CaO, 0-7% MgO, 0.01-5% TiO2, 0.01-7% ZrO2, 0.1-10% Al2O3, 0-8% Na2O, 0-8% K2O, 0 to less than 3% La2O3, 0-1% F- and 0-3% P2O5, the sum of CaO + MgO being 0-7%, the sum of BaO + ZnO + CaO + MgO being less than 60% and the sum of Na2O + K2O being 0-8%; (b) 73-75.5% SiO2, 8-12% B2O3, 4-7% Al2O3, 5-10% Na2O, 0-4% K2O, 0-3% CaO and 0-3% BaO; (c) 59-61% SiO2, 3-5.5% B2O3, 13.5-15.5% Al2O3, 2.3-5% MgO, 8.2-10.5% CaO, 8.5-9.5% BaO, 0.03-0.3% CeO2, less than 0.02% H2O and less than 0.08% alkali metal oxides, the ratio of (MgO + CaO)/BaO being less than 1.6 and the ratio of CaO/MgO being less than 4.2%; or (d) 50-65% SiO2, 5-15% B2O3, 10-20% Al2O3, 0-10% MgO, 0-20% CaO, 0-20% SrO, 0-20% BaO, 0-3% ZrO2, 0-10% ZnO, 0-1% SnO2 and 0-10% TiO2.
