The method involves estimating the expected future acceleration at a defined point in the vehicle based on the current acceleration value and/or direction signals from at least two accelerometers (3-5). The estimated future acceleration value is taken into account in the triggering decision process. At least one accelerometer (3) is mounted in the centrally mounted controller (1) and at least one other in an outlying unit.
