Optical scanning device (1) for welding electrode wear monitoring, comprising a processing unit for evaluating signals from a reflected light detector. An optical scanning device (1), for monitoring wear of cylindrical or rod-like welding electrodes (4), consists of an optical element (5, 6), which comprises one or more light emitters for emitting a light beam (12) and one or more light receivers for receiving light reflected from the welding electrode, and an opto-electrical processing unit for evaluating the light receiver signals. An Independent claim is also included for a method of monitoring welding electrode wear using the above scanning device.
