The condition of water in a flowing waterway system is monitored by the characteristic and periodic movements of selected living organisms and changes to the organisms, using these as bio-indicators. The changes in the bio-indicators are measured by reference to a normal condition established by earlier measurements. Changes beyond a given threshold are used to signal a water alarm condition.
