Laps (W) from a lap former (1) are placed one by one on a trolley (15) which forms an intermediate store to collect sufficient laps to load a comber. The trolley (15) is moved step by step past the output chute (10) by an under floor drive (32) till it is full. The batch is then transferred to an overhead conveyor (76) and taken to a comber. Empty tubes (H) are returned by the reverse process.
