Zirconium alloy cladding tube production, for PWR or BWR nuclear fuel rod, comprises partially evaporating high vapor pressure alloy constituent from one surface of a semi-finished product of constant composition
Nuclear fuel rod cladding tube production comprises partially evaporating a high vapor pressure alloy constituent from one surface of a semi-finished product (1) of constant alloy composition. Production of a nuclear fuel rod cladding tube, consisting of an alloy containing an alloy constituent of elevated temperature vapor pressure greater than that of the alloy base metal in a lower concentration at a first surface than at a second surface, comprises subjecting a semi-finished product (1) of constant alloy composition to heat treatment at the first surface for partial evaporation of the alloy constituent. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a nuclear fuel rod zirconium alloy cladding tube having a high vapor pressure alloy constituent in a concentration which steadily decreases from one surface to at least 0.5 wt.% lower value at the other surface; and (ii) a nuclear fuel rod zirconium alloy cladding tube produced by the above process. Preferred Features: Heat treatment is carried out by laser irradiation, preferably combined with oxygen introduction into the surface, prior to working the semi-finished product to the final cladding tube dimensions.
