Fiber-reinforced composite body, e.g. an internally vented brake disk, is produced from a preform having a metal or silicon core which acts as a metal or silicon source during melt infiltration
The fiber-reinforced composite body is produced from a preform having a metal or silicon core (20) acting as a metal or silicon source during melt infiltration. Fiber-reinforced composite bodies are produced from porous carbon matrix preforms by mixing fibers, fiber bundles or fiber agglomerates based on carbon, nitrogen, boron and/or silicon with a carbonizable binder and optionally further additives or fillers, pressing the mixture to a green body, pyrolyzing to convert the binder to a porous carbon matrix and then infiltrating the resulting preform with molten metal or silicon. The novelty is that one or more metal or silicon cores (20) are provided in the green body to act as a metal or silicon source during melt infiltration.
