PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for making a right-shift of an integer operand and rounding a fractional intermediate result in order to obtain an integer result, are provided to get signed, unsigned operands to be right-shifted by N bits, and round the fractional intermediate result so that it can be close to zero or kept away from zero. CONSTITUTION: A right-shifter(202) in a logic circuit(200) is an M-bit M-location shifter for receiving an M-bit binary integer operand as an operand input, a shift count signal and a mode signal. The right-shifter(202) presents arithmetic right-shift, and inserts a sign bit of the operand at an MSB(Most Significant Bit) of the operand if a mode signal is '1'. The right-shifter(202) inserts zero into the MSB of the operand. A range detector(204) receives an unsigned operand(N) that includes a mode signal bit and a round signal bit. The round signal bit is '1' when a round is kept away from zero, and zero when the round gets close to zero. A control circuit(206) receives a fraction bit, the MSB of the operand, the mode signal bit, the round signal bit and a range designation bit from the right-shifter(202).
