Described are substituted propanes defined according to thegeneric structure:(see formula I)wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of:(i) cyanide having the structure:(see formula II)or(ii) hydroxylamino methyl having the structure:(see formula III)and wherein R2 is C1 -C5 lower alkyl or methoxy, R3 ishydrogen or methyl, uses thereof in augmenting orenhancing the aroma of perfume compositions, colognes andperfumed articles including but not limited to bleachcompositions, solid or liquid anionic, cationic, nonionicor zwitterionic detergents, perfumed polymers, fabricsoftener compositions, fabric softener articles, cosmeticpowders and hair preparations. Also described areprocesses for preparing such 2,2-dimethyl-1-nitrilo orhydroxylamino-3-(alkyl phenyl)-substituted propanes bymeans of reacting an alkyl benzyl halide with isopropylcyanide in the presence of a basic catalyst such assodamide or process for preparing such 2-methyl-1-nitriloor hydroxylamino-3-(methoxyphenyl)-substituted propanesby means of reacting a methoxy benzyl halide with ethylcyanide in the presence of a basic catalyst such assodamide.
