The invention concerns a method for disinfection of equipment in the food industry, preferably equipment used for slaughtering or processing of meat. The method is characterized in that an aqueous medium containing reuterin and/or a reuterin-producing bacterial strain is applied to the surface of the equipment. Reuterin is effective against bacteria located on the surface of food industry equipment, and is able to reduce the number of bacteria in both the short and long term. The agent is effective at the temperature prevailing in the work locations in the food industry. Furthermore, it does not affect the properties of the foodstuffs, such as meat properties, and therefore the food industry equipment can be placed in use without being wiped off. IMAGE
