A bolus for ore administration to a ruminant animal comprises a resin matrix such as rosin in which is incorporated at least one oily substance, typically vitamin E, in combination with an emulsifier, such as sorbitan mono-oleate. The oily substance and the emulsifier leach out from the bolus as it resides in the rumen and form an emulsion with the water present therein. This emulsion is then absorbed by the animals biological system. The addition of an emulsifier may make the bolus pliable and this may be prevented by adding a stiffening material such as beeswax. Alternatively, the bolus may be partly encased in a metal, rubber, or wax material.
