Determination of the NMR longitudinal relation time of a medium comprises magnetically polarising nuclei in the medium along a static magnetic field, momentarily inverting the magnetic polarisation of the nuclei in each of a number of different spatial volumes in the medium, transversely magnetising the nuclei in each of the spatial volumes after a different recovery time for each of the spatial volumes and measuring a NMR from each of the spatial volumes. An Independent claim is also included for a method in which a series of Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) echo trains, each corresponding to a different sensitive volume, are acquired in sensitive volumes after magnetic polarisation of the nuclei in each of the volumes and for a duration long enough to determine the presence of slowly relaxing components in the medium. Successive CPMG echo trains are of a shorter duration and have echo spacing than the first echo train.
