Fluid from the containment (1) is passed through at least one ultrafiltration membrane (3a,4a,5a,6a) whose filtration threshold is of order 0.01 microns. The filtrate on the other side of the membrane contains a high proportion of hydrogen. The hydrogen is eliminated from the filtrate either by release to atmosphere (52) or by catalytic oxidation (8). The purified fluid is then returned to the containment.
