Tread rubber above the inlays is removed by high pressure, water jet-assisted cutting tools. Rubber removed is sent for further processing, e.g. shredding and/or grinding. An Independent claim is included for the equipment executing the procedure, including a rotating system supporting the nozzles. Preferred Features: Tread rubber is removed by high pressure water jets using a suitably-rotated nozzle system (note both tire and nozzles can be rotated). It is comminuted. By adjustment of the cutting nozzles (3), or using a similarly-adjustable second nozzle pair (4), with or without abrasive addition, the tire (1) sidewall is separated. The cutting jet is preferably directed vertically onto the tire inlay. Remaining rubber is separated from the tread and sidewall exteriors, also from the inside of the tread and sidewalls, until the inlays are freed, these operations being effected simultaneously or successively. To increase the effect of the jets, abrasives are added, having similar properties to the material removed. Alternatively the addition is differentiated, facilitating its re-separation.
