The implant has a coating (5) of bioactive silicate glass produced by fusing high-purity synthetic metal oxides. The implant comprises a crown (2) and an anchoring section (4) which is lower than the gingiva (3) in the implanted condition. An adherend (6) in the form of a cement layer (7) lies between the anchor and crown. An Independent claim is also included for production of the implant by mixing the finely divided metal oxides with a mulling liquid, preferably ethanol, to obtain a creamy consistency, applying a thin film of the mixture to the implant base, drying, and firing at a temperature below 850 deg C.
