An oil separator comprises immersed rotary discs with oleophilic surfaces especially attractive to oils and greases (oily matter). A wiper (Teil A) rests against the surface of each disc, removing oily matter into the collection vessel. Preferred features: The disc surface is coated with oleophilic material. The disc surface (Teil B) is polished to high reflectivity, its outer edge (Teil C) having a T-shaped profile, assisting centrifugation of oily matter. Discs are parallel, with set spacing along the common shaft, which is driven in rotation. Wipers fixed in location with respect to the shaft are above the fluid in which the discs are immersed. They have a channel shape, sloping above the water, down to the collection vessel. They are shorter than the disc half diameter. Discs are perpendicular to the water, or are at a set angle to its surface. The entire unit is carried on a float. It is fixed in position. The floating unit is alternatively moved by an external craft, or has its own drive. Discs have the same or differing diameters, on the common shaft. The wipers, including their drain channels, and the discs too, can be heated. The oily matter adheres to the discs, only being stripped off on re-emerging from the water.
