The receiver receives next-generation television (ATV) signals (HDTV), for example, in areas affected by NTSC co-channel and other interference. The received signal is processed at a transmitter that is activated to reduce NTSC co-channel interference contained in the received signal. The received signal means a continuous field synchronization signal that is combed to generate a subtracted signal. The subtracted signal is com-filtered to reduce NTSC co-channel interference and is applied to the comparator 36 along with the unfiltered subtracted signal. The comparator determines if the level of NTSC cochannel interference is large enough to be independent of the received ATV signal filtered to reduce the NTSC cochannel interference.
