The controller has an electromechanical program switching mechanism with at least one program drum and control electronics (E) which receives program step-specific code numbers from the program drum that control a function, esp. a washing function, of one of the systems, esp. the washing motor (M) of the machine. The control electronics control a switching mechanism motor (TM) to program step drive the program drum. A fixed series of several functions is placed in a control electronics memory (Sp) for at least one code number; by calling up the code number the control electronics drive the functions of the associated series in sequence.
