An ink storage and dispensing device for an ink jet printer typically has a main reservoir that is maintained at atmospheric pressure and takes the form of a flexible pouch. The main reservoir is connected to the volume variable chamber through a unidirectional valve that allows ink to flow from the reservoir to the chamber and from the chamber to the reservoir. The chamber is connected to the fluid outlet that is closed to prevent the flow of external ink. However, when the ink supply portion is installed in the printer, the fluid outlet forms a fluid connection between the chamber and the printer. The chamber is a part of a pump provided in an ink supply which can be operated to supply ink from a reservoir to a printer. The pump includes a linearly actuated pumping member and a flexible diaphragm overlying the pumping member, the diaphragm being impermeable to transport of oxygen and moisture therethrough to avoid deterioration of the ink in the chamber.
