PURPOSE: To enable even a person other than the experts to easily produce a membership function. ;CONSTITUTION: The data Ai-Bi which are detected by a sweetness sensor 11, a water sensor 12, and a color sensor 13 and the synthetic data Mi are stored in a storage 31 in response to the identification code Di of a subject. The result of comparison of 'sweetness' obtained between the subjects Di and Dj is inputted by an input device 15 and stored in the storage 31. An evaluating part 32 arranges the results of comparison in accordance with the signs of inequality and gives the evaluation values these results in the order of arrangement. A histogram production part 33 produces a histogram with the input data Ai-Mi set on a horizontal axis and the corresponding evaluation values set on a vertical axis respectively. A deciding part 34 decides whether the function obtained by connecting the apexes of the histogram is suitable or not as a basic function for production of a membership function based on such viewpoints that decide whether the function has only one peak or not and whether the degree of dispersion is small or not around the peak. If it is decided that the function is suitable as the basic function, the function is normalized by a membership function generating part 35.
