The invention relates to an air interface for efficient use of the spectrum in the 2.4 GHz ISM band using existing DECT base band controllers. According to the invention, a high-order modulation method is used to keep the required base band below the maximum value of 1 MHz as prescribed in FCC part 15. One such high-order modulation method is, according to the meaning of the invention, the QPSK or π/4 DQSK modulation method. According to the invention, the frequency spread spectrum is also used, whereby the carrier frequency is modified after a specific time interval has elaspsed. The frequency spread spectrum method enables the high-order modulation method's increased susceptibility to faults to be compensated by closelying discrete carrier states. The invention provides an air interface which meets the standard requirements of USA FCC part 15 whilst at the same time enabling use of components developed and produced for the DECT standard. The DECT base band controller can, for example, continue to be used for the inventive air interface.
