An expert system in which a plurality of knowledgedescriptive layers are provided in a frame system. Eachdescriptive layer is composed of plural frames; the frames of thelowermost knowledge descriptive layer are provided inassociation with the elements of a knowledge processing objectsystem. The content of frames of the upper knowledgedescriptive layers is determined as an inference is made withreference to the frames of the lower layer. This determining isstarted and executed by the updating of the content of slots of theframes.
