Process for reducing residual levels of solvents present in pharmaceutical compositions, in particular in antibiotics and antibiotics obtained thereby. The process comprises eliminating solvents, in particular methylene chloride, used in the purification of antibiotics of the ampicillin or amoxycillin type, prior to recrystallisation, by vacuum evaporation with collection of the initial distillate over a few seconds at low temperature. Antibiotics having methylene chloride contents of less than 3 ppm are obtained.
