Slugging the response of a thermocouple measuring hot injection nozzle temperature - is achieved by surrounding the junction with stainless steel, of lower thermal diffusivity than the highly conductive metal embedding the heating element, to achieve improved flowing melt temperature control
The new electrical heating element described here is for industrial use, especially for heating hot channel nozzles for pressure injection moulding. It comprises an electrical heater embedded in a metal of high thermal conductivity. The side of the heater away from the material to be heated, is preferably covered by thermal insulation. A thermocouple (5) is embedded in the metal and used to control the heater. In this new design, the thermocouple junction (6), i.e. its point of measurement, is surrounded by poorly-conducting material (7). This causes a sluggish thermocouple response. Preferably the junction is part-surrounded by stainless steel.
