PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst for producing fumaric acid by the isomerization of maleic acid and a method for producing a high quality fumaric acid efficiently using the catalyst. ;CONSTITUTION: The catalyst for producing fumaric acid contains (A) a bromate and (B) at least one kind of thiourea compound selected from among thiourea and its derivatives as indispensable components. In addition, the catalyst can also contain at least one kind of water soluble metal salt selected from among the water soluble salts of cerium, copper, manganese, and iron. Fumaric acid is produced by the isomerization of maleic acid in the presence of the catalyst. In spite of the addition of a small amount of the catalyst, the isomerization reaction of maleic acid can be conducted at a high conversion ratio at a relatively low temperatures of 100°C or lower. Besides, fumaric acid obtained contains only a small amount of unreacted maleic acid and by-produced malic acid, is colorless, and has good thermal stability.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
