PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a LN crystal and a LT crystal which continuously show preferable properties for such uses as a surface acoustic wave(SAW) filter device, an optical modulating and switching element for guided waves, and an electrooptic Q-switching and modulation device, and which have no drawbacks relating to the accumulation of excess spurious pyroelectric or piezoelectric surface charges. ;SOLUTION: In the preparation of a lithium niobate crystal or a lithium tantalate crystal having an enhanced effect to decrease charges on the crystal surface so as to be used for an electronic or optical use, the lithium niobate crystal or lithium tantalate crystal is preliminarily controlled in its state so as to enhance the effect of the crystal to decrease surface charges of the lithium niobate crystal or lithium tantalate crystal.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
