PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To insert Latin words in capitals into a non-Latin document through the use of a keyboard by automatically switching an input mode when a shift key is depressed in combination with an alphabetic key and automatically returning to an original mode when only the alphabetic key is depressed. SOLUTION: A user inputs a command and information to a personal computer 20 through the keyboard 40 and a mouse 42. The computer 20 detects a key event corresponding to the insertion of a capital Latin text string to automatically switch an input mode. Switching from a non-Latin input mode to a Latin input mode is stared by simultaneously depressing the shift key and the alphabetic key. Once the capital Latin text string is inputted, the input mode is returned to the original non-Latin input mode. At the time of releasing the shift key and continually depressing only the alphabetic key, return to the original input mode occurs.
